Practical 3D printing guide

Material costs – practical 3D printing guidance, real-world cost considerations and free calculator tools from 3dprintcalc.no.

This guide compares the material side of 3D printing costs: filament for FDM, resin for SLA/MSLA and powder where relevant. Material choice changes the cost per gram or millilitre as well as practical factors such as waste, support material and failed-print allowance.

Use material cost when you want to understand the consumable part of a job. For a spool-based calculation, use the filament calculator; for a complete selling price, combine material with machine time, labour, overhead and margin in the full cost calculator.

Do not compare materials only by the purchase price of a spool or bottle. Density, usable quantity, support waste, drying or handling needs and typical failure rate can all change the amount actually consumed per finished part. For recurring jobs, record the real material usage from the slicer or completed production instead of relying on nominal package weight alone.
